* "Plantations of St. Simons Island: Paintings and Sculptures," an exhibition featuring Retreat Plantation, Cannon's Point and Hampton Plantation at Butler Point may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at the Left Bank Gallery, 3600 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island. Mildred Huie's historical paintings of the plantations and Mary Whitty's sculptures of plantation personalities will be highlighted.

* "40th Anniversary Celebration: The Chatov Family: Portraits, Paintings and Drawings," will be exhibited at Left Bank Gallery, 3600 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, as part of the gallery's 40th anniversary celebration. * "By the Sea," an exhibit featuring the works of sculptor Bob Knorr of Abaco Fin Farm and local artists Ella Cart, Charlotte Harrell, Arlene Kline, Lynn St. Clair, Joyce Shelander and Rita Trudeau, will be held at Glynn Art Association, 319 Mallery St., St. Simons Island.

* "A Night on the Town," the annual end-of-the-year performance by students of the Studio South Performing Arts Center, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Glynn Academy Auditorium, Norwich and Monck Streets, Brunswick. Tickets are $10 in advance; $12 at the door.

June 8 and 9
* Auditions for "Same Time, Next Year," a C.A.P.E. Theater production, will be held at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1105 Union St., Brunswick. The Tony Award-winning show examines the relationship trials and tribulations between two people who are married to others, but meet up once a year. Performances will be held in September. * "Waiting for Oprah" a comedy by Mary Miller, will be shown at 7:15 p.m. Saturdays through May. Evenings begin with coffee and dessert. Avenue of Oaks

Bloody Marsh Battle Site
Located Off Demere Road

The battle fought here on July 7, 1742, when Spanish troops landed on the south end of St. Simons Island, proved to be the turning point in the Spanish conquest of Georgia. The marsh ran red with Spanish blood and the battle was a decisive British victory which ended forever the threat of Spanish invasion into this colony.

Gascoigne Bluff

Overlooking the Frederica River, this area was a favorite Native American campground, and during Colonial days, the landing at the bluff became Georgia's first naval base and bears the name of the man, Gascoigne, who first surveyed the Georgia coast for England. Live oak timbers milled here in 1794 were used in building "Old Ironsides," the USS Constitution, in 1874, and timbers were also cut here for the Brooklyn Bridge.

St. Simons Island Lighthouse

First constructed in 1807 by James Gould on Couper's Point, this towering, 104 foot lighthouse was reconstructed in 1872 on the same site to replace the original which was destroyed by retreating Confederate forces in 1862. A beautifully restored 1872 lighthouse keeper's home complements the lighthouse.
